Committees

SOHIP Beautification Committee

Making SOHIP more beautiful, one corner at a time.

The committee improves sidewalks, corners and medians, turns underused parcels into community assets, and makes sure public spaces reflect neighborhood pride as the area develops.

Upcoming

Committee meetings, clean-up days, and volunteer mornings. Neighbors and members are both welcome.

SOHIP Pop-Up: Cleanup at the Plaza

Join the SOHIP Beautification Committee for a cleanup of the SOHIP Plaza at 4111 Gilbert Ave. No materials or experience required, we will have everything for you!

Bring comfortable clothing as we will be getting sweaty cutting overgrown vegetation, pulling weeds, raking debris, and helping clean up our neighborhood.

Details
Phase one

The Gilbert & Avondale triangles

Our first major project explores transforming the empty triangular parcels at Gilbert and Avondale, through low-maintenance landscaping, a possible dog-friendly green space, or modest design elements that signal neighborhood identity. All of it inside city ownership and safety constraints.

What's next

Future

School green space

Improving access to green space at the neighborhood school.

Future

Tree canopy

Expanding tree coverage across the neighborhood, block by block.

Long term

Lemmon Avenue

Beautification along Lemmon to create more inviting edges and reflect the residential character behind them.

Smaller projects, ongoing

Murals

Neighborhood murals, in partnership with property owners.

Placemaking

Markers and signage that tell you where you are.

Cleanup days

Coordinated volunteer days across the alleys and medians.

Site oversight

Watching vacant and active development sites for compliance with neighborhood standards.

Why beautification matters

The work demonstrates stewardship, creates safer walkable spaces, and gives us leverage in arguing for development that respects zoning and neighborhood scale. A neighborhood that takes care of its corners is harder to dismiss.
